If you read down below the quote, it appears that one thing that differentiates Tassell from some current leadership is that he candidly admitted he changed his point of view as he led the GARBC out of its strong separatist heritage to a more tolerant stance, something that some would call a new evangelical approach…In any case, in recent days, I think we are wrestling with the same thing that happened with Tassell and the GARBC – we have basically a move towards a Tassell-like change. It is significant that some outspoken leaders of these changes in our circles have strong GARBC roots.

That is right on target Don. The same thing I thought of when I read down the article with the quote you cited. I suggest you reprint that portion on Tassell’s legacy. That way many will see the “significant” parallel that you speak of. Tassel was completely transparent about his change and new direction.

Well, thanks for trying it out. I realize the speaker is probably kind of obscure in the current context. The speaker was Paul Tassell, the National Representative of the GARBC for a significant period of time beginning in 1979. The quote came from his message that year at a GARBC conference in Dayton, Ohio, according to this site. I don’t particularly endorse the views of this particular site, but I think that quotes like this are accurate, at least.

The GARBC appears to have tightened up some of its stance in recent years, although I am not entirely familiar with those circles. There is an association in Canada that was once affiliated in some ways with the GARBC. They are known as the Fellowship Baptists (longer formal name), were originally the group led by T. T. Shields, but have since gone much further towards the new evangelical point of view.

In any case, in recent days, I think we are wrestling with the same thing that happened with Tassell and the GARBC – we have basically a move towards a Tassell-like change. It is significant that some outspoken leaders of these changes in our circles have strong GARBC roots.

Haven’t seen much of his quotes to have put two and two together. Maybe some well structured clues will help.

I cheated after my guess, never heard of him either, but understand why the quote is significant.

Well, thanks for not giving it away. He was a significant figure in a segment of erstwhile fundamentalism.
